SPEAK SOFTLY: Congress fails, few notice

Ball State Daily News, Ball State University, IN

The editorial cartoonist for the "Indianapolis Star" is a gentleman named Gary Varvel. I've enjoyed Mr. Varvel's work for several years - first for its conservative nature, and second for his gift of pointing out political stories that the mainstream media tends to overlook.

A week from today, a swarm of wheels will clog Coralville. As RAGBRAI riders make the journey from North Liberty into Coralville for a night of entertainment at S.T. Eastern is making the move from using H&H Shuttle Bus services to an in-house program beginning this August.

Two new buses were leased and the administration is finalizing the small details.

"I've fulfilled my end of the bargain," said Scott Harrison, the owner of H&H.

Eastern can do more

The Daily Eastern News, Eastern Illinois University, IL

1 day ago by Editorial Board

Our View Situation: By state mandate, Eastern must reduce 40% of our waste-stream, but we are currently at 33%. Stance: As a whole, we can get to 40% reduction easily with just a little bit of cooperation and action, but we shouldn't stop there. Eastern students ought to do a much better job recycling.

OUR VIEW: Ball State cares

Ball State Daily News, Ball State University, IN

Some students might feel a professor might not care about their well-being. Some might feel that faculty and staff aren't interested in what happens to them.

American poet John Ciardi once said, "A university is what a college becomes when the faculty loses interest in students.

64-bits for two cents

Daily Iowan, University of Iowa, IA

Moving can be monotonous work. The packing and unpacking of an endless pile of boxes, the hauling belongings up and down the stairs with two arthritic knees, the cleaning. I hate cleaning under normal circumstances, let alone the deep-tissue hard-core scrubbing of the bathroom necessary to keep your apartment's next tenant from discovering the strawberry Jell-O stain that rings around your bathtub. It's tedious and boring, and it's all I've been doing the last several days.

The disintegration of humanity: Beauty pageants: brains vs. bodies

Western Courier, Western Illinois University, IL

1 day ago by Sarah Zeeck

When was the talent portion of the Miss Universe and most other pageants worldwide eliminated? What do we judge on now? Legs, waists and breasts. Well, and, of course, a pretty face.

Personality and intelligence have grown unimportant, and we are left with hour-long TV programs parading young women across a stage, flaunting their "beauty.

The Golden Arches' pro-gay agenda

The Daily Illini, University of Illinois, IL

2 days ago by The Daily Illini Editorial Board

Those looking for something to mock need look no further than the corner of 22nd and Spring streets in Oak Brook, Ill., today, where the American Family Association has planned a press conference announcing its call for a boycott against McDonald's. Not because of the food, but in protest of the fast food giant "throwing the full weight of their corporation to promoting the homosexual agenda, including homosexual marriage.

Policy on inked cops only skin-deep

Daily Iowan, University of Iowa, IA

2 days ago by DI Editorial Board

The Des Moines police have recently joined their West Des Moines breathren and instituted a policy that will leave a considerable number of its officers "under cover."

The policy prohibits tattoos, branding, intentional scarring, and any other forms of body art from being exposed on the face, head, neck, hands, arms, and legs. Those officers with tattoos on their forearms are required to cover them up with long sleeves.

Crude comments create chaos

Western Courier, Western Illinois University, IL

2 days ago by Ed Komenda

A recent television recording showing Jesse Jackson making obscene comments in regard to democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has created much controversy. Jackson's words, ironically, were not as clear-cut as he anticipated, though. The reverend, in a statement pointed at Obama, said that he wanted to "cut his nuts off.

Rising costs

Central Michigan Life, Central Michigan University, MI

Only one group can be hit with a tuition increase on Thursday - and like the last three years, it's the incoming freshmen that will bear the burden.

This year, however, the cost increase won't be upon them from the outset.

The CMU Promise is over, meaning tuition can now be adjusted each semester for the incoming class.

Decision time

Central Michigan Life, Central Michigan University, MI

Central Michigan University Trustees have an opportunity Thursday to advance a land area that has sat dormant for far too long.

The last time the trustees met on May 16 they were uninformed about the six-story hotel and office development proposal on south campus's Center for Applied Research and Technology.

Does age dictate quality?

Western Courier, Western Illinois University, IL

3 days ago by Ed Komenda

John McCain is 71, and Barack Obama is 46. The wide age margin between the candidates suggests a classic battle between old and young. But is age really that important, considering that a president, unburdened by any special circumstances, can only serve a maximum of eight years in office? Perhaps a few comparisons with former presidents can answer that question.

Textbook piracy has arrived

The Daily Illini, University of Illinois, IL

You knew it was coming. Just as illegal music downloading began years ago, so has illegal textbook downloading. One such Web site that provides this service is the aptly-named Textbook Torrents, which supplies reportedly more than 5,000 different textbooks in digital PDF format.

Road trip! A solution for all our problems

Chicago Flame, University of Illinois, IL

One of the more frustrating things about being a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago is the lack of community at our school. We all have friends on campus and at home that we can enjoy life with, but if we are honest with ourselves we will acknowledge that it is difficult to meet people at this university because a wide majority of students treat it as if it were a giant community college.

Apparently, Billy Ray Cyrus didn't make enough money being a second rate country musician and TV star. If a guest appearance on "Diagnosis Murder" is the pinnacle of your career, you probably aren't rolling in dough. However, Billy Ray Cyrus does have a tremendous talent.

OUR VIEW: Disconnected

Ball State Daily News, Ball State University, IN

The IRS just gave Ball State University an excuse to limit the use of university-owned cell phones and PDAs.

According to the Internal Revenue Service's Taxable Fringe Benefit Guide, cell phones and PDAs are now "listed items," which means the university can't claim them for tax purposes.
